5 Reasons Pizza Catering Works for Holiday Parties

Holiday parties should be about getting people together, catching up, and having a good time. But if you're hosting, food can quickly become one of the biggest things to figure out.

You need something adults and kids will eat, something that works for a group, and ideally something that doesn't leave you spending half the night in the kitchen.

That's one of the reasons pizza works so well for holiday gatherings. Here are five things we've learned from cooking for parties around Orange County.

1. Pizza Makes Feeding a Mixed Group Easy

Holiday parties usually bring together a little bit of everyone—adults, kids, picky eaters, adventurous eaters, and people who just want something familiar.

Pizza makes it easy to offer a variety without creating a huge menu.

A few classics like cheese, pepperoni, Margherita, and sausage and mushroom can cover most of the crowd, while a vegetarian option adds a little more variety. Cutting pizzas into smaller slices also lets everyone try a few different kinds instead of committing to one.

2. Fresh Food Changes the Feel of a Party

There's something different about food being made while a party is happening.

Instead of putting everything out at once, pizzas can come out gradually throughout the evening. People grab a slice, go back to talking, and come back when the next pizza hits the table.

It creates a much more casual, social way of eating—which is usually exactly what you want at a holiday party.

And when pizza is being cooked onsite, the smell of fresh dough, sauce, cheese, and a hot pizza oven doesn't hurt either.

3. It Keeps the Host Out of the Kitchen

This might be the biggest one.

Hosting already comes with plenty to do: cleaning the house, setting everything up, getting drinks ready, keeping an eye on the kids, greeting people, and making sure everyone is having a good time.

Adding cooking for 20 or 30 people on top of that can turn a fun night into a lot of work.

Having the main meal handled means the host can actually be part of the party instead of disappearing into the kitchen every 10 minutes.

4. Pizza Works Well With the Way People Actually Eat at Parties

Most holiday parties aren't formal sit-down dinners.

People arrive at different times. Some are hungry immediately. Others eat later. Kids grab food and run off to play. Adults stand around talking with a drink in one hand and a plate in the other.

Pizza fits that kind of party really well.

You don't necessarily need everyone sitting down at the same time, and food can keep coming out over the course of the event. Smaller slices also make it easy for guests to eat a little at a time and try different pizzas.

5. The Food Can Be Part of the Experience

One thing we've noticed at Costa Crust events is that people naturally end up watching the pizzas being made.

Kids especially want to see the dough stretched and watch a pizza go into the oven. Adults start asking questions about the dough, ingredients, or how hot the oven gets.

It wasn't something we really thought about when we started, but the pizza station often becomes one of the places where people gather during the party.

And that's really what a good holiday party is about anyway—giving people a reason to get together.

Keep the Holidays Simple

There are plenty of ways to feed a holiday party, and pizza certainly isn't the only one. But if you're planning a relaxed gathering where people can eat, talk, move around, and enjoy themselves, it's hard to beat fresh pizza.

Our favorite parties are usually the simplest ones: good food, a backyard full of people, kids running around, and nobody worrying too much about what's happening next.

That's a pretty good recipe for the holidays.
